ARt portal<\/b> is an app for viewing exhibitions of Augmented Reality artwork on your phone or tablet. It was created to allow artists and galleries to present experimental digital 3D artwork easily without expensive or delicate equipment. In addition to displaying the artwork, an in-app camera shutter button allows you to capture them to your camera roll!<\/p>\n

\n

Overview<\/h4>\n

To view the 3D content, first you will need to select an exhibit from the Exhibitions menu. This will download the Augmented Reality content for the exhibition you wish to view. You will also need access to the targets that trigger each scene. These may found in the wild (at the gallery, perhaps), in the app itself, or from the links on this page under Targets<\/strong>. Scanning these targets will automatically display Augmented Reality art and identifying information on your screen.<\/p>\n

“Pop-up (AR)t” Book and Exhibition at CoCA, Seattle<\/h4>\n

\"\"<\/a>\"\"<\/a>\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a>\"\"<\/a>\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

Center on Contemporary Art’s “Pop-up (AR)t started out as a book proposal by CoCA Publisher Ray C. Freeman III, now CEO of WORKSHOP 3D, LLC. A call for work was issued, and 18 artists were selected by jurors David Francis and Joseph Roberts. The book quickly grew into an exhibition. 18 pedestals were built to display the targets, and visitors could view the artwork on their own phones during the course of the show. Jeff Mihalyo and j. shagam were two of the artists participating in the show, and in 2017 joined with Curator Ray C. Freeman III to form WORKSHOP 3D, LLC to provided Augmented Reality services to others.<\/p>\n

“Augmented Nature” at Shoreview Park, Shoreline<\/h4>\n

\"\"<\/a>\"\"<\/a>\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

“Augmented Nature” was conceived by Shoreline Public Art Coordinator David Francis to explore Augmented Reality in an outdoor setting, following the presentation of “Beyond the Picture Plane” at Shoreline City Hall. WORKSHOP 3D worked with artist Ken Winnick to add features to ARt portal to support an interactive panoramic view of Shoreline’s past juxtaposed with a live camera view, and with Dave to create a swinging park gate and a camera view through an ice cave into the woods beyond. National Park style signs, made by Joel Kennedy, was used as targets.<\/p>\n

Group Show at Axis Gallery, Pioneer Square, Seattle<\/h4>\n

WORKSHOP 3D brought elements from CoCA’s “Pop-up (AR)t” and Shoreline’s “Beyond the Picture Plane” and “Augmented Nature” to this multi-media show at the Axis Gallery and Event Space in Seattle’s Pioneer Square.<\/p>\n

“Room With a View” at Magnuson Park Gallery, Seattle<\/h4>\n

\"\"<\/a>\"\"<\/a>\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

Having explored work on pedestals and work on the wall in previous shows, Curator Ray C. Freeman III challenged the artists invited to participate in “Room With a View” to use Augmented Reality to explore the space of the gallery. Jeff Mihalyo turned his “Suitors” inside-out, viewing it from the inside rather than the outside, Xavier Lopez Jr. worked with fluffy to create a floating cloud that bounced around the room, and fluffy’s own “void *” reached out from the wall and all but filled the space with writhing black tendrils. In the run-up to the show, Jeff and Ray were interviewed by Gallery Manger Julianna Ross on local radio station SPACE 101.1 FM about the show and Augmented Reality. Selected work from CoCA’s “Pop-up (AR)t” and Shoreline’s “Beyond the Picture Plane” was shown in the outer lobby of the gallery.<\/p>\n

“Lusio Festival: A Night to Awaken” at Volunteer Park, Seattle<\/h4>\n

\"\"<\/a>\"\"<\/a>\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

At “Lusio”, WORKSHOP 3D presented an ever-changing series of Augmented Reality targets, mostly culled from previous shows, on a television screen at ground level. All of the Augmented Reality pieces projected upwards from this screen, at a scale much larger than expected. We used the “downloadable exhibition” feature added to ARt portal for the Magunson Park Gallery show to implement this show without having to upgrade ARt portal itself.<\/p>\n
